I found that keeping the highest numbered tile in the upper right allows me to reach 1024 quite easily, although I’ve never gotten 2048 myself. There are many strategies to the game, and to each their own. I’ve seen people get 2048 by keeping their highest tile centered, but I’ve found that more difficult. I tend to keep my highest tile in the upper right/left, but that’s just my strategy.
